The Red Hat Appliance Operating System allows ISVs to distribute their applications pre-packaged as complete solutions, simplifying deployment, management and maintenance for their end users.
The Red Hat Appliance Operating System offering includes the Virtual Appliance Development Kit (vADK) that allows ISVs to configure the operating system, middleware and applications to produce a single system image. This can then be deployed on multiple virtualization platforms as well as in software-as-a-service "cloud" deployments.
The Red Hat Appliance Operating System is coming soon. ISVs interested in the participating in Red Hat's Appliance program are requested to join the Appliance Operating System mailing list to stay on top of the most recent news and activities.
The Red Hat Appliance Operating System (AOS) is built from the industry's leading open source operating system: Red Hat Enterprise Linux. AOS retains ABI and API compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, allowing applications that are certified on Red Hat Enterprise Linux to run unchanged on AOS.
A single Red Hat Enterprise Linux certification covers all deployment models supported by Red Hat: standalone servers, virtualization, cloud based computing and software appliances.
With Red Hat Enterprise Linux you can certify once and deploy everywhere.
By using Red Hat Appliance Operating System ISVs do not need to perform complex and time consuming porting activities. Using AOS an ISV can standardize on a single platform, significantly reducing development costs.
By shipping a pre-configured solution the ISV can ensure that the entire environment is correctly configured, tested and certified. So ongoing support costs are minimized.
Red Hat has a proven track record for support, providing 24x7 support around the globe, ensuring that the ISV can receive the level of support they require to provide their customers with a secure and stable solution.
Red Hat's Appliance Operating System inherits the proven security of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and the reduced platform footprint provides the smallest possible attack vector.
ISVs can publish new images or provide incremental patches from the vADK allowing them to respond quickly to customer issues or security concerns.
The Appliance model allows ISVs to expand their reach into new markets segments, in particular the small to medium business market (SMB). All the complex integration and configuration is already complete, out of the box.
ISVs can leverage the software appliance model to expand their sales channels. An ISV can provide a pre-packaged solution that requires minimal technical training to sell and implement.
The sales cycle is accelerated and simplified. Demonstrations, evaluations and proof-of-concepts are simplified. Customer satisfaction is improved since the solution is installed in minutes and "Just works".
The Virtual Appliance Development Kit (vADK) creates images that can be deployed as a virtual machine on:
